Living in Bayonne, NJ
Commutes, housing, and the honest pros and cons, from someone who sells here.
Bayonne, Hudson County
The peninsula people keep “discovering.”
Bayonne sits on a three-mile peninsula between Newark Bay and New York Harbor, which means water on three sides, a small-city feel along Broadway, and a commute into Manhattan that’s better than most people assume. It also has a large share of two- and three-family homes.
Getting around
- Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stops at 8th, 22nd, 34th and 45th Streets, connecting to the PATH in Jersey City and Hoboken
- NJ Transit 119 and 120 buses into Manhattan
- A ferry terminal is planned next to 51 Port Terminal Blvd. Ground broke in December 2025; no opening date has been announced.
- Turnpike Extension (Exit 14A), Route 440, and the Bayonne Bridge to Staten Island
The housing stock
- Lots of two- and three-family homes, which makes house hacking a real option
- Classic single-families on the quieter streets off Broadway
- Newer condos and townhomes near the light rail and the waterfront
- Wide range of prices from one end of town to the other, so street-by-street comps matter
Parks and downtown
Broadway is the main street: restaurants, bakeries and errands within walking distance for much of the city. Stephen R. Gregg Park, the former Bayonne Park, is a Hudson County park of nearly 100 acres on Newark Bay, with fields, courts and a waterfront promenade.
Schools
Public schools are run by the Bayonne School District. For official information on any school, see the New Jersey Department of Education’s School Performance Reports.
What I tell buyers
Check the flood map for anything close to the water and get an insurance quote early. For multi-families, look hard at the leases and who pays which utilities. And compare the light rail stop to your actual commute before you fall for a house on the wrong end of town.
