Old Bridge, Middlesex County

More house for the money, with a bus to Manhattan.

Old Bridge is a large township in southern Middlesex County, stretching from the Raritan Bay shore at Laurence Harbor inland along Route 9 and Route 18. It’s mostly single-family neighborhoods, with commuter buses to New York from a park-and-ride on Route 9.

Getting around

  • Old Bridge Park & Ride at US 9 and Meleta Way: NJ Transit 139 buses to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (about 41 minutes on the schedule, longer in traffic), plus some weekday-morning 132 trips
  • North Jersey Coast Line trains from nearby Aberdeen-Matawan or South Amboy stations
  • Route 9, Route 18 and the Garden State Parkway

The housing stock

  • Mostly single-family homes, from mid-century ranches and split-levels to newer Colonials
  • Townhouse and condo communities, some with HOA fees
  • Bayfront homes in Laurence Harbor
  • Lot size, updates and distance to the bay or the park-and-ride can all move price

Parks and downtown

Old Bridge Waterfront Park in Laurence Harbor, a Middlesex County park, has a 1.3-mile boardwalk and fishing piers on Raritan Bay. Cheesequake State Park, with trails, a lake and salt marsh, borders the township (mailing address 300 Gordon Road, Matawan). Shopping is mostly along Route 9 and Route 516 rather than one downtown.

Schools

Public schools are run by the Old Bridge Township Public Schools. For official information on any school, see the NJ DOE School Performance Reports.

What I tell buyers

Map the drive to the park-and-ride or the train before you choose a section of town. Near the bay, check the flood map and insurance. In HOA communities, read the budget and rules. And older homes may have original systems worth a hard look at inspection.
