Bloomfield, Essex County

Two train stations, two county parks, one historic green.

Bloomfield sits between Newark and Montclair, with a historic town green, a busy Bloomfield Avenue, and newer apartment buildings around its downtown train station.

Getting around

  • Bloomfield station downtown and Watsessing Avenue station, both on NJ Transit’s Montclair-Boonton Line
  • Midtown Direct and Hoboken trains (see the service note below)
  • NJ Transit buses along Bloomfield Avenue
  • Garden State Parkway runs through town

The housing stock

  • Colonials, Cape Cods and other single-family homes on tree-lined side streets
  • A good number of two-family homes
  • Newer apartment and condo buildings near the downtown station
  • Prices vary by section of town, so compare nearby sales, not town averages

Service note, updated Oct 30, 2026: during NJ Transit’s Portal North Bridge cutover (Oct 11 to Nov 14, 2026), weekday Midtown Direct trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line run to Hoboken instead of New York Penn Station, with tickets cross-honored on PATH, NY Waterway and NJ Transit bus 126. NJ Transit expects regular service from Nov 15, subject to testing. NJ Transit: Portal cutover

Parks and downtown

Brookdale Park (shared with Montclair) and Watsessing Park are both Essex County parks. The Bloomfield Green historic district centers on the town green along Broad Street. Bloomfield Avenue and the streets around the train station are the main business district.

Schools

Public schools are run by Bloomfield Public Schools. For official information on any school, see the NJ DOE School Performance Reports.

What I tell buyers

Two-families here can work for house hacking: check the leases, the meters and the certificate-of-occupancy rules before you count on the rent. For single-families, compare the walk to the station and the Parkway noise on the specific street.

Thinking of selling?

Pricing in Bloomfield comes down to street-level comparables, not town-wide averages. Start with a free valuation and I’ll follow up with a real comparative market analysis. Get your home value.
